Mobilizing Power Africa’s Workforce

The Power Africa Initiative was announced by President Obama in June 2013, and its goal is to increase sub-Saharan Africa’s power supply and access to reliable, affordable, and sustainable power. Sub-Saharan Africa is home to nearly 600 million citizens living without access to reliable and adequate power supplies. The initiative initially focuses on six countries: Liberia, Ghana, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania. The thought paper turns its attention to the need to mobilize Africa’s workforce to help train and employ African workers to manage and maintain the power sector in Africa. It also argues that the Power Africa Initiative should broaden its multi-stakeholder partnerships to include workforce development NGOs like OIC International to help with community engagement and training in the rural areas. Finally, the paper suggest that the President’s domestic focused Green Jobs Initiative, which our sister organization OIC America participates in, could serve as a useful example for African countries looking to reduce carbon emission and increase green energy use, while also growing the green jobs market for the unemployed. We hope that you enjoy reading the paper. OIC International is using this paper to drive the narrative and debate about workforce development in Power Africa and to carve out a space and role for our organization in this massive new Obama Administration project.
